Day 1 - Road Warrior

DAY ONE OF THE EPIC ROAD TRIP (hereafter known as the ERT):

It's time to hit the road!!!

Six months of planning, wishing, fixing, painting, and praying have culminated in us leaving on our ERT to California where we will frolic in the ocean and hike in the mountains. Yay!

Poor Sophie had to go to the kennel.  We needed to reduce the possibility of major problems on this trip.  Since Sophie is a major problem on any ordinary day, we figured that taking her on a 10-day trip would multiply her problem-ness ten-fold.  She does look hopeful in this picture though.  Poor thing.

Hitched up and ready to go

First stop-The Bonneville Salt Flats.

Even though we have been to Wendover many times, (it has the closest gambling to Salt Lake...not that we would know about gambling...cough, cough...anyway....)  we have never stopped to take a picture at the Salt Flats.

There is a rest stop just east of Wendover that has spots for really great photo opps.  Don't just pull over on the side of the road...use the rest stop.  However, you will have salt in your car forever.  Just a warning, ya'll!

While researching places to stay that were reasonable driving distances from each other, we figured that Elko would be a good place to stop for the night.  One minor problem would be the fact that Nevada is hotter than hell during the month of August.  Staying in Elko would slowly, or not so slowly, cook us.  Sorta like being in a tiny turquoise oven.  Then, I happened (while googling "best places to camp near Elko) upon the Thomas Campground in the Ruby Mountains.  Holy Moly! What a undiscovered gem!  It wasn't too far outside Elko - maybe 30 minutes - and was completely perfect. The campsite (#36) was really quite private and had a concrete pad for the table, firepit with cooking rack and a nicely laid out tent pad for the boy that refused to sleep in the trailer...too girly.  So, he has a lovely, brand new Suisse Yosemite tent.  I'll let you know how it holds up.

Lovely!

We tacos in a bag (which were a hit!) and listened to Kolton play his guitar. Great start to a (hopefully) great trip.

Decked out with the party lights
